NORMAN, Okla. - niversity of Oklahoma women's basketball player Stacey Dales was named second-team Verizon Academic All-America as announed today by the College Sports Information Director of America (CoSIDA). Dales was also selected to the Associated Press Academic All-America first team earlier this week.
The junior from Brockville, Ontario, is majoring in communication and holds a 3.72 grade point average and becomes the first women's basketball player to earn both athletic and academic All-America honors in the same season. She is also a three-time, first-team Academic All-Big 12 honoree. Dales is currently averaging 16.1 points, 5. 2 rebounds, 2.5 steals and a Big 12-leading 7.6 assists a game.
The Verizon Academic All-America Teams are selected by a vote of the 1,800-member CoSIDA. To be eligible, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve an maintain a cumulatvie GPA of at least 3.20 on a sacle of 4.00. Sports information directors nominate eligible athletes from their schools who were named to district teams prior to being voted upon the national level. CoSIDA has been selecting Academic All-America Teams since 1952.
The Sooners are 26-5 on the season and are currently ranked No. 7 in the nation. OU will open play in the NCAA Tournament as a No. 2 seed in the West Regional on Saturday. OU will take on No. 15-seed Oral Roberts at 6:30 p.m. in Norman at the Lloyd Noble Center.
