NORMAN, Okla. - The seventh-ranked University of Oklahoma women's basketball team begins NCAA Tournament action against Oral Roberts on Saturday, March 17, at 6:30 p.m in Norman, Okla. By way of its No. 2 seed in the West Regional, OU earned the right to host the NCAA First and Second Rounds at the Lloyd Noble Center. Seventh-seeded George Washington will meet the No. 10 seed Stanford in other first round action at 9:07 p.m. The game will be televised by ESPN 2.
The Sooners have played both Oral Roberts and Stanford this season. OU defeated ORU in Tulsa, 87-56, in its second game of the season on Nov. 18 and leads the all-time series with the Golden Eagles, 16-14. The Sooners edged Stanford in overtime, 102-98, in Norman on Dec. 27. OU's all-time series record with the Cardinal is tied 1-1. The Sooners' only meeting with George Washington occured in 1994 when the Colonials recorded an 88-74 win in Washington, D.C.
Oklahoma enters posteseason play with a 26-5 record, having won the Big 12 Conference regular season title. OU advanced to the finals of the Big 12 Tournament. The Sooners are led by fifth-year coach Sherri Coale, who was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year for the second straight season.
OU is making its fourth apperance in the NCAA Tournament. In 1986, the Sooners were a No. 4 seed and received a first round bye. Oklahoma defeated Vanderbilt in the second round before losing to top-seeded Texas. Oklahoma returned to the tournament in 1994 after an eight-year abscence as a No. 7 seed. OU downed Loyola (Md.) and then fell to Louisiana Tech. The Sooners made last year's field of 64 as a No. 5 seed. The Sooners won their first round game against BYU and then pulled the upset over then-defending national champion Purdue on the Boilemaker's home floor. OU bowed out to eventual national champion Connecticut in the "Sweet Sixteen."
Oral Roberts comes in as a No. 15 seed with a 20-10 overall record. The Golden Eagles were awarded an automatic bid to the tournament after winning the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament. ORU is coached by Jerry Finkbeiner. This marks ORU's second appearance second NCAA Tournament appearance in the last three years, both under Finkbeiner.
George Washington has a 22-9 overall record. The Colonials finished second in the Atlantic 10 Conference and advanced to the finals of the league tournament. George Washington is coached by former OU assistant Joe McKeown and will be making its eighth appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Stanford, who is the No. 10 seed, enters with a 18-10 overall record. The Cardinal finished in a three-way tie for first place in the Pacific-10 Conference. Stanford received the conference's automatic NCAA berth by virtue of a tie breaker and will be making its 14th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. The Cardinal are led by legendary coach Tara Vanderveer, won her 500th career game earlier this season.
