Oklahoma Game Quotes
Iowa State vs. Oklahoma
3/10/01
Oklahoma Head Coach Sherri Coale
On the game:
"I think we have to give Iowa State a lot of credit. Megan Taylor was terrific. They did a great job in transition and really put the pressure on us. I sure would like to have that in bounds over again, I think we would have scored."
On tonight's three-point shooting:
"We came into the game knowing that Iowa State is a terrific three-point shooting team. They didn't shoot near as well as they usually do. They shot 31 percent from the three-point line, and they are accustomed to a little bit better than that, and so are we. I think everybody came into this game thinking this was going to be 105-103, and the first half was the exact opposite of that. Neither team could get a basket. Both teams played pretty good defense and there was a lot of adrenaline on our side."
Guard Stacey Dales
On the cold start:
"We've never been in this circumstance before. We've never been to the championship game before in the Big 12 tournament. I'm not making an excuse, but I think that there was a little over-adrenaline, for me anyway. We just had to get the jitters out and we were fine after that."
On the Iowa State crowd:
"That's a great crowd. It's great for women's basketball. I think it's a great thing for the Big 12 Conference. Hopefully, a lot of people were able to see it. I think Iowa State does a great job of drawing a lot of people because they play such a fun style. You have to give them a lot of credit for that."
Guard Sunny Hardeman
On the Iowa State Crowd:
"I like playing in that kind of atmosphere. It's fun. They are huge with Iowa State, but that didn't really effect me very much. It makes the game more fun."
On calming themselves to get into a rhythm:
"You just gotta get into the flow of the game. From the start we were shooting air balls. We were shooting shots long. W e had over adrenaline. We had to get into the flow of the game and just go from there."
Iowa State Head Coach Bill Fennelly:
(opening) "This means a lot to the team, but it means even more because we've beaten some truly outstanding teams, including Oklahoma. I'm very proud of this team and I'm very happy that the seniors got to end the season the way they should. The fans were phenomenal. These are two programs that have great respect for each other."
(on Megan Taylor's performance) "I was not worried about Megan this game. I've been around her every day for four years. Her stats may not be the greatest, but when it comes to winning time, I want Megan to be the one who takes the shot."
(on the fans) "The fans were huge tonight. They're loyal to the school, and they love having these kids represent our university."
"The minutes that our players played tonight weren't normal, but the flow of the game, the adrenalin and the championship atmosphere helped to get a few more minutes out of everybody. Lindsey (Wilson) played 40 minutes and played well, especially in leading this team in each situation this evening. We had a different plan for the tournament, defensively. We wanted to be more aggressive on the ball, and I gave the kids more motivation to play this way and really challenged them as a team to play more aggressive defense."
Iowa State Center Angie Welle
(on repeating as tourney champs) "It felt better to win this year. Last year was good, but it's so hard to repeat."
"I think our fans were a little angry [referring to the result of the ISU men's game on Friday], and a little rowdy today. They are die-hard fans. It's so nice to have all that energy."
Iowa State Guard Erica Haugen
"Our fan support was phenomenal."
(on beating Oklahoma twice) "It feels good to beat a champion and to become a champion at the same time."
Iowa State Guard Megan Taylor (on the possibility of an OU run) "I had a feeling Oklahoma would make a run, that they would make a great attempt at a comeback, and they did."
(on lack of production recently) "I said to myself, 'This is ridiculous. You know how to shoot.' My shot felt good tonight. The first one went in, and it kind of went from there."
(on the difference in the game) "We played hard tonight, and played good defense. If we play good defense, get some steals and rebound - that all leads to fast-break points."
