Norman, Okla. - The Women's Basketball News Service announced its post season award winners earlier this week. The University of Oklahoma's juniors LaNeishea Caufield and Stacey Dales were on that list.
Caufield was selected as the College Defensive Player of the Year and named to the WBNS All-America third team. Dales, however, was voted to the WBNS All-America first team. This is the third time in as many years that OU has been honored by this publication, as former Sooner Phylesha Whaley was named first-team All-America last season and Caufield received freshman All-American accolades in 1999.
Caufield leads the nation in steals with 4.4 thefts per game and has pocketed four-plus steals in 20 games this season. She also tops the team and ranks seventh in the Big 12 Conference in scoring with 16.8 points a game. This marks the second consecutive year a player from the Big 12 Conference has earned the College Defensive Player of the Year honor. Nebraska's Nicole Kubik was the recipient in 2000.
This is Dales' first All-America honor of the season. The 6-1 point guard leads the Big 12 Conference, Sooners and ranks sixth in the NCAA in assists per game with 7.8. The Canadian also averages 16.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and shoots 47.6 percent from the field. Dales recently received first-team Academic All-Big 12 honors and is one of six student-athletes selected to the District VI All-Academic team.
Other players from the Big 12 that received All-America honors include, Iowa State's Angie Welle (second team), Texas Tech's Plenette Pierson (second team) Baylor's Sheila Lambert (third team), Missouri's Amanda Lassiter (fourth team), and Baylor's Danielle Crockrom (fourth team).
The seventh-ranked Sooners finished the regular season as the Big 12 Conference champions with an 15-1 mark and 24-4 overall record.
Oklahoma's next action will be at the 2001 Big 12 Tournament from March 6-10. The Sooners will play the winner of the Oklahoma State/Kansas game on Wednesday, March 7 at Noon at the Municipal Auditorium.
