Norman, Okla. - University of Oklahoma women's basketball player Stacey Dales is one of 10 nominees from around the nation for the Conseco/Nancy Lieberman-Cline Step Up Award as recently announced by the Rotary Club of Detroit. The elite honor is given to the top collegiate point guard in Division I women's basketball.

Dales is currently averaging 16.2 points, 7.4 assists and 4.6 rebounds per game for the 18-4 and 10th-ranked Sooners. Her mark for assists per game ranks first in the Big 12 Conference and sixth in the nation. The junior, who hails from Brockville, Ontario, Canada, competed for the Candadian Olympic team this past summer in Sydney, Australia. Dales earned second-team All-Big 12 honors for the 1999-2000 season and was a preseason first-team All-Big 12 selection for 2000-01. She is the only player in OU women's basketball history to score more than 1,000 career points and dish out over 500 assists. She also received Big 12 Player of the Week honors on Jan. 14.

The criterion for the Conseco Step Up Award is the floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills that personified Lieberman-Cline during her career. The award, now in its second season, is a national project of the Rotary Club of Detroit. The AP sportswriters from across the country will nominate the finalists and eventual winner. Sue Bird of Connecticut received the award for the 1999-2000 season.

Dales has also been nominated for the ESPN.com Point Guard of the Year and selected as one of the top-five point guards in the nation by ESPN play-by-play announcer Beth Mowins.

The 2000-2001 award will be presented at a luncehon at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center on April 7 at Noon. Money raised at the event will be given to the American Cancer Society for direct support of various breast cancer initiatives, and to the Women's Sports Foundation, in creating an educated public that encourages participation in female athletics and supports gender equality in sports.
