OKLAHOMA CITY - The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team lost its first match of the season to No. 48 New Mexico, 5-2, today at the Santa Fe Tennis Center in Oklahoma City. After two wins over Southern Nazarene and Northern Iowa, the loss drops the Sooners to 2-1 on the season.
Oklahoma's two points in the match came from wins by sophomore Melissa Mendieta and senior Stephanie Sajbert. Mendieta defeated junior Neza Kurnik, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 3 singles, moving her record to 3-0 on the season. Sajbert upped her record to 2-1 on the year after a come-from-behind victory over junior Courtney Choate, 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (10-8).
Mendieta and senior Viviana Mracnova downed New Mexico's Natlaia Alekhova and Krunik, 8-4, in the No. 1 singles match. The Sooner duo owns a No. 13 ranking in the Central Region and a 3-0 record on the season.
OU returns to action on Feb. 9 when it hosts Arkansas State at 5 p.m. at the Santa Fe Tennis Center.
