Six Women's Basketball Players Earn Academic All-Big 12 Honors

NORMAN, Okla. - he University of Oklahoma women's basketball team placed six student-athletes on the 2001 Academic All-Big 12 teams, the conference office announced today. Juniors Stacey Dales, Jennifer Cunningham, Shannon Selmon and Jamie Talbert and sophomore Caton Hill made the first team, while senior Desiree Taylor landed a spot on the second team.

Dales, the Sooners' starting point guard, is currently averaging 16.3 points and 5.1 rebounds a game and is sixth in the nation with 7.7 assists per game. The Brockville, Ontario, Canda, product is an All-America candidate and a finalist for the Conseco Step Up Award, which honors the nation's best point guard. Dales was also one of six players named to the District VI Academic team. She is communication major and owns a 3.72 cumulative grade point average. Dales is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 selection.

Cunningham spent much of the season as OU's starting center, before suffering a knee injury that has kept her out of the Sooner's last eight games. In the six games prior to her injury, she had increased her production, averaging 10.8 ppg and 7.8 rpg in 26.3 minutes of play. Cunningham is receiving academic all-conference honors for the third time in her career. She is majoring in zoology.

Talbert has stepped into the starting lineup for Oklahoma in Cunningham's abscence. The Elkhart, Kan., native is averaging 7.4 points and four rebounds a game, while shooting 56 percent from the field. Talbert is in her first season at Oklahoma after two years at Seward County Junior College. She is majoring in biochemistry.

Hill, a two-year starter for OU, is the Sooners' third-leading scorer at 12.9 points per game. Her 9.1 rebounds a game ranks fourth in the leauge and she is shooting 52 percent from the field. Hill, who is from Ada, Okla., is a zoology major, and a member of the OU Honors College.

Selmon, a native of Norman, Okla., has played in 18 games and is shooting 56.3 percent from the field on the season. She is receiving first-team honors for the second time in as many years. Selmon is majoring in social studies education.

Taylor is one of the Sooners' top reserves and is averaging 2.0 points and 1.9 rebounds a game. Taylor is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 selection, earning first-team honors in 1999 and 2000. The Richardson, Texas, product is majoring in chemical engineering.

Eligible student-athletes are nominated by each school's director of student-athlete support services and media relations offices. The women's basketball academic all-conference teams included 37 first-team members and 13 players are named to the second team. The first-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.2 or better grade-point-average and those on the second team have maintained a 3.0 to 3.19 GPA. Students-athletes must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests.

The Sooner women finish out the regular season against Texas Wednesday in Austin. Tip-off is at 6:30 p.m. and the game will be televised by the Fox Sports Network.
