NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma men's basketball coach Kelvin Sampson announced today that DeAngelo Alexander, a senior standout at Midwest City (Okla.) High School, has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball for the Sooners beginning next season. Alexander, a consensus top-50 national recruit, is ranked by respected recruiting analyst Bob Gibbons as the country's 19th-best high school senior.

The 6-5, 210-pound Alexander averaged 19.5 points, 7.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.9 steals as a junior for Midwest City's Class 6A state champs last year. He shot .560 from the field, .400 from three-point land and .700 from the free throw line for the 26-2 Bombers.

Alexander helped his team to a 26-2 mark and Class 6A state title as a sophomore as well.

"DeAngelo is an impact guard," said Sampson. "One of the things that's always been an objective of ours is to recruit the best players in the state. When you have the chance to recruit one of the best guards in the entire nation, and he's from your state, that helps in so many ways.

"He's one of the best guards I've seen. He combines, size, scoring ability and basketball I.Q. He's been extremely well coached and he possesses a great passion for the game - I've always been impressed with how much DeAngelo loves basketball. He's one of the few players in high school who can truly play all five positions. In college, he'll be a terrific wing guard or combo guard. He's a kid who will have the chance to step in his freshman year and be a major contributor."

Said Midwest City coach Rodney Dindy, "He's a really good shooter, he covers the perimeter well defensively and he's an excellent leader. DeAngelo is very athletic and can jump. He's a very good inside player who can more or less score at will around the bucket, and his ability to get his shot off from the perimeter is outstanding. He works hard and is highly respected by his teammates."

Alexander is the first member of OU's 2001-02 recruiting class.
