NORMAN, Okla. - The 2001-02 men's basketball season officially began Saturday morning as Oklahoma held its initial practice of the year at the squad's brand new practice facility on the south end of Lloyd Noble Center.

Head Coach Kelvin Sampson directed a physical two-and-a-half-hour session that focused on fundamentals, defense and intensity. Included in the workout were shooting, passing and ball-handling drills, loose ball and charge drills, 2-on-1 transition work, and defensive stance and positioning practice. Sixteen players participated in the workout.

The defending Big 12 Tournament champs will continue practice Sunday in preparation for the rapidly approaching regular season. Sampson's squad will hold its annual "Late Night with the Sooners" on Friday, Oct. 19 at 9 p.m. at the Howard McCasland OU Field House. Oklahoma will play exhibition games Nov. 5 (OU Field House) and Nov. 9 (Lloyd Noble Center) before opening the regular season Nov. 12 versus Central Connecticut in the Preseason NIT at Lloyd Noble Center.

The Sooners, who have participated in seven straight NCAA Tournaments and have racked up 53 wins over the past two years, are ranked in the top 25 in several preseason print and online publications.
