OU Wrestling Sweeps Four Matches at Lone Star Duals

SOUTH GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - The sixth-ranked University of Oklahoma wrestling team improved its record to 7-1 with four wins today at the Lone Star Duals at South Grand Prairie, Texas. The Sooners downed Wyoming (37-7), Brown (35-6), Harvard (27-15) and No. 24 Northern Iowa (23-15). With four wins on the day, senior Michael Lightner improved to 126 victories for his career, the third best total in school history. Junior Jared Frayer pinned three opponents to move into eighth place in career pins with 27. He also has 12 pins on the season, the best OU single-season mark since 1998. Bo Maynes and Matt Ridings (125 pounds), Lightner (141), Frayer (149), Robbie Waller (165) and Michael Barger (174) all went undefeated on the day.

OU jumped to an early 20-0 lead against Wyoming, powered by falls from Maynes and Frayer and major decision victories from Witt Durden (133) and Lightner. Waller scored a technical fall and Crump pushed the dual to its final score of 37-7 with a pin.

The Sooners won by major decision in four matches and collected to two pins in their 35-6 drubbing of Brown in the day's second dual. Maynes, Durden and Lightner major decisions led OU to a 12-0 lead. Tony Moore recorded his first career pin at 157 and Waller followed with a major at 165. Waymon May won by fall at 197 pounds and Crump won by major decision at heavyweight.

Lightner and Frayer pinned Harvard wrestlers in back-to-back matches in the Sooners 27-15 win against the Crimson. Frayer's pin came in just 27 seconds, the fastest fall of his career. Waller won his third-consecutive match by bonus, scoring a major decision, and May won by technical fall.

OU faced its strongest test in its final dual, a 23-15 win against 24th-ranked Northern Iowa. The Sooners won six matches, three by bonus. Lightner and Barger both won by major decision and Frayer pinned his third opponent of the day. His third pin came in just 33 seconds. Crump lost his only match of the day, a narrow, 6-5, decision to No. 13 Paul Hynek.

"We're proud of the way our guys wrestled," said Sooner Head Coach Jack Spates. "We won all of our matches by fairly large margins, and that was with wrestling two or three backups in most of our duals. Michael Lightner, who just dominated, won four matches on the day to move into third place in career wins at Oklahoma. He's absolutely masterful. Jared Frayer pinned his way through the day and was utterly dominant. He's becoming one of the most prolific pinners I've ever seen. Robbie Waller was not challenged all day and Michael Barger went 3-0 and beat a tough opponent in nationally ranked Steven Schenk (Wyoming). Waymon May went 3-1 against tough competition. Leonce Crump also won three of his matches before losing a heartbreaker against Paul Hynek (Northern Iowa) and proved he's one of the premier heavyweights in the country."

OU will travel to Tempe, Ariz., to battle the Arizona State Sun Devils on Jan. 12. Action begins at 7 p.m. After its dual with ASU, the Sooners will continue their Western swing with duals against Cal Poly and Fresno State on Jan. 14.
