OKLAHOMA CITY - The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team defeated NAIA opponent Southern Nazarene today at the Woodlake Racquet Center in Oklahoma City. OU emerged victorious at every position and did not give up a set to the Crimson Storm.
The Sooners were led by 2000 NCAA doubles participant Viviana Mracnova as she blanked SNU's Kat Adams (6-0, 6-0) in the No. 1 singles match. At No. 2 singles, sophomore Annette Bryntesson downed Laurie Peterson, 6-2, 6-0. Sophomore Melissa Mendieta won by injury default with a 3-2 lead in the first set. Senior Stephanie Sajbert, who returns to the Oklahoma lineup missing last season due to an elbow injury, and sophomore Joni Helleland dropped Kim Green and Bekcy Ciccone 6-0, 6-0, respectively. Redshirt freshman Tiffany Streeter, competing at No. 6 singles, opened her OU career with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Whitney Edwards.
The No. 1 and No. 3 doubles teams of Mendieta/Mracnova and Helleland/ Streeter grabbed 8-1 victories. Byntesson and Sajbert won, 8-0, at No. 2 doubles.
The Sooners return to action on Feb. 1 when they host Northern Iowa.
