The sixth-ranked Oklahoma wrestling team won three of four matches today at the Cliff Keen/NWCA National Duals in University Park, Pa. With their performance, OU could finish as high as third place and no lower than sixth. The Sooners downed Nebraska-Omaha (36-6), No. 15 Edinboro (23-13) and Penn State (33-3). OU's only loss came to Iowa State in the quarterfinals, 19-17.

OU started the day by defeating Nebraska-Omaha, 36-6. The Sooners won eight of 10 matches, including five victories by bonus. Witt Durden (133), Jared Frayer (149) and Waymon May (197) all won by fall. Michael Lightner (141) and Robbie Waller (165) defeated their opponents by techincal fall and major decision, respectively. Oklahoma's only losses came at 174 and 184 pounds. Dustin Walker (174) and heavyweight Shane Zajac both saw their first dual action of the season against the Mavericks.

In the quarterfinals, OU jumped out to an early 14-3 lead but fell to fourth-ranked Iowa State, 19-17. The Cyclones won five straight matches in the comeback victory. Sooner Bo Maynes opened the dual with a fall at 125 pounds, but ISU's Matt Azevedo took Witt Durden down on the edge of the mat with one second remaining for a 7-6 win. OU responded by posting a Lightner victory and Frayer technical fall to take a 14-3 lead. Then, Iowa State won five consecutive matches. The string was highlighted by a Cael Sanderson major decision at 184 pounds and Zach Thompson's 2-1 tiebreaker win against May at 197. Oklahoma's Leonce Crump closed out the dual with a 6-1 victory at heavyweight.

OU rebounded from its loss to Iowa State to post a 23-13 win against No. 15 Edinboro. Oklahoma's Maynes and Durden claimed the dual's first two matches by major decision for an 8-0 lead. Frayer escaped with a narrow 7-5 decision against No. 10 Ryan Shapert while Waller downed Matt King. May upset tenth-ranked David Shunaman, 5-3, for his first win against a ranked wrestler this season. Brian Burrows won by forfeit at 157 pounds. The Sooners wrestled four reserves in the dual.

In their final dual of the day, OU defeated host school Penn State, 33-3. The Sooners won nine bouts in the dual, their only loss coming at 141 pounds where reserve Melvin Lofton wrestled in place of Lightner. Four Oklahoma gapplers, Frayer, Waller, Josh Lambrecht (184) and May won by bonus. For Lambrecht, who has been out of the lineup due to injury, it was his first win since the Oklahoma Open on Nov. 25 and first victory this season against a ranked wrestler.

"We wrestled well today and we wrestled hard," said OU Head Coach Jack Spates. "We posted an impressive win against Nebraska-Omaha in which we were able to wrestle several of our reserves. We also wrestled well against Iowa State but lost a coin toss at 197 (May's loss to Thompson) and Witt (Durden) was taken down at the buzzer on a very controversial call. We rebounded with an impressive win against a ranked Edinboro team in which we wrestled several backups but our most impressive win was probably our last. Penn State was on a roll, on their home floor, and we dominated them. Josh Lambrecht had a huge win against a really good wrestler from Penn State (Knupp) after getting off to a slow start in his first action since being injured. I'm very proud of our team."

Oklahoma's first match tommorrow will begin at 11 a.m. against Iowa. If the Sooners win, they will compete in the third-place match and for fourth place if they lose.
