SYDNEY, Australia - Oklahoma's Stacey Dales scored a team-high 13 points and grabbed four rebounds in Canada's 78-46 loss to Australia in the first preliminary contest for women's basketball of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, on Saturday. Dales, who's appearing in her first Olympic Games and is the youngest player on the Canadian National team, started the game and played 28 minutes for her country. She also contributed one assist and one blocked shot while shooting 46.2 percent from the field.

Tammy Sutton-Brown matched Dales in scoring with 13 points. Sutton-Brown also hauled down a game-high nine rebounds.

With eight minutes to play in the first half, the Australians opened up a 10-point lead, and by half time led 40-19. Lauren Jackson and Sandy Brondello led the Australian team in scoring with 19 and 18 points, respectively.

"You just can't afford even a five-minute spell of poor play," said Dales.

The Canadians made 20 of 56 attempts (35.7 percent) for the game, while the Australians sunk 28 of 58 (48.3 percent). Australia's defense forced Canada to commit 23 turnovers.

"I think we're a very sensitive team and when we get burned ... we deflate mentally," Canada's Head Coach Bev Smith said after her team collapsed in the final 10 minutes of the first half following a solid start.

"I just don't think we kept our mental focus ... and then the game was over."

Canada's next game will be against Senegal on Sunday.
