Norman, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics team hired Guard Young, a two-time NCAA champion and six-time All-American at Brigham Young, as an assistant coach announced head coach Mark Williams.
"We're excited to have Guard back in the gym," said Williams. "I trained Guard as a junior at Bart Conner Gymnastics Academy for five years before he left for Brigham Young. He continued to have success at the collegiate level and finished 10th at the Olympic trials in August. We hope to have Guard train here at the Viersen Center for the 2001 World Championships. He will be a tremendous asset to the staff. He knows my system and should fit in well."
Young led BYU to three-straight NCAA Gymnastics championships after a six year absence and was a four-time NCAA qualifier. He was a two-time NCAA champion on the vault (1999 and 2000) and also earned All-America honors on the floor exercise and horizontal bar (1999). Young was also a two-time All-American in the all-around (1999-2000). Young's father, Wayne Young, was captain of the 1976 Olympic team and served as head coach at BYU from 1979-87.
"I work with Mark for five years while in high school," said Young, an Oklahoma City native. "He is one of the best coaches in the nation and runs a great program. He sets goals and his teams accomplish them. Success follows him everywhere he goes. I'm from the area and like the people here. OU has a good gym, tradition and a great training environment."
