OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Nebraska forced an "if necessary" game in the semifinals of the Big 12 Phillips 66 baseball tournament at Southwestern Bell Bricktown Ballpark by upending previously-unbeaten Oklahoma 3-1 Saturday.
The Huskers and Sooners play again at 5 p.m. (CDT) for the right to advance to Sunday's tournament championship contest against the winner of either one or two games Saturday against currently undefeated Baylor and one-beaten Texas Tech. The Bears and Raiders hook up at 1:05 p.m. (CDT) Saturday while the title game Sunday is at p.m. (CDT) on FOX Sports Net.
Lefthander Scott Fries (5-0) pitched his first complete game of the year to earn the pitching win for the Huskers, now 45-15. His previous longest stint was six innings ashe struck out five, walked one and had a shutout going until the ninth inning when Rick Park of the Sooners pushed home teammate Tommy Whiteman (who had tripled) with a sacrifice fly.
Nebraska, bidding to nail down its first back-to-back NCAA tournament bids since 1979-80, advanced to 7-1 in two years of Big 12 Phillips 66 tourney activity. First baseman Dan Johnson knocked in one run and had a pair of hits to lead the Huskers, the 1999 Big 12 Phillips 66 tourney crown.
Logan Cuellar was the tough-luck loser for the Sooners and fell to 3-2 in spite of allowing just three runs (all earned) while striking out a career-high six batters in his day's work.
