LUBBOCK, Texas - A base hit to centerfield in the bottom of the 12th inning allowed the winning run to score from third base for Texas Tech as Oklahoma fell, 8-7, in extra innings Saturday afternoon at Dan Law Field. The Sooners and the Red Raiders both had trouble bringing base runners home as the two teams left 15 base runners and 12 base runners stranded, respectively. OU dropped to 32-17 overall and 15-8 in the Big 12 Conference as TTU improved to 29-20 overall and 16-10 in the league.
Trailing 7-6 to begin the ninth inning, the Sooners tied the game up on a double by first baseman Rick Park (4-for-7) that scored second baseman Zach Lekse (1-for-7), who had drawn a leadoff walk, from first base to send the game into extra innings. Third baseman Jason Bartlett (4-for-4) joined Park with a four-hit effort to pace Oklahoma offensively and added three runs scored. Reliever Rocky Cherry (6-5) held the Red Raiders scoreless over the final three innings before surrendering a base hit to TTU first baseman Mark Austry who eventually scored the winning run.
Texas Tech leftfielder Jason Rainey led the Red Raiders at the plate with a 3-for-5 afternoon and three runs scored. Kevin Tracey (6-6) picked up the win by pitching the final 4.2 innings in relief.
The three-game set concludes tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Dan Law Field.
