NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma (31-15, 14-7 Big 12) baseball team broke into two of the nation's top 25 collegiate baseball polls as the rankings were released today. Baseball America ranked Oklahoma at No. 19, while Collegiate Baseball listed the team at No. 20. It marks the first time the Sooners have been ranked in both polls since the week of May 18, 1998, when Oklahoma was No. 14 in Collegiate Baseball and No. 20 in Baseball America. The USA Today Baseball Weekly/ESPN Top 25 poll had yet to be released, however, OU has received votes in their last two polls.
The Sooners, who completed a three-game sweep over intrastate rival Oklahoma State last weekend, have won 14 of their last 15 contests, including a stretch of nine-straight. OU stands in fourth place in the Big 12 Conference after last weekend's games and heads into this weekend's series against Texas Tech having won nine of their last 10 league games.
"Of course we're thrilled to be recognized for our efforts," commented Head Coach Larry Cochell. "The players have worked really hard all year and we're finally starting to put our pitching and our hitting together to beat some good teams. Our pitching has been especially strong over the last month and has really carried our team to where we are right now."
The nationally-ranked Sooners take on the third-ranked Sun Devils of Arizona State tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at the Southwestern Bell Bricktown Ballpark.
