NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma baseball team (27-15) exploded offensively in a 15-5 victory over McNeese State (32-14) Tuesday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The Sooners pounded out a season high 20 hits, including three home runs by first baseman Rick Park, designated hitter Chad Cochell and catcher Eliot Joyner, and scored in every inning except the second and the seventh. OU starting pitcher Logan Cuellar (1-0) picked up the win in his first appearance on the season and did not allow a hit through his three innings of work.
Park's three-run blast in the fourth inning, his 10th on the season, helped tie career highs in hits with four and RBIs with five. Also establishing career highs in the game was second baseman Zach Lekse who set a high in hits with four and matched a previous high of three runs scored. Cochell (1-for-3) nailed the first home run of his career, a solo shot, over the rightfield fence in the sixth inning to score his second run of the night. Joyner (1-for-4) added a two-run homer in the eighth, while leftfielder Sean Murphy turned in a 3-for-5 performance with a run scored to contribute to the Sooners' hot-hitting effort.
Second baseman Stuart Landreneau drove in two of the Cowboys' runs as part of a 1-for-5 performance to lead McNeese State offensively. McNeese State starting pitcher Joey Poirrier (1-3) suffered the loss after giving up five earned runs over 4.2 innings of work.
The two teams complete the two game series tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
