NORMAN, Okla. - Two University of Oklahoma student athletes, David Kjeldgaard and Huy Ly, were honored today with second-team GTE Academic All-America honors. A total of 45 student-athletes from across the nation, with 15 men garnering either first, second or third team recognition, were selected to the fall-winter at-large team.
Kjeldgaard, a native of Council Bluffs, Iowa, competed at 157 pounds for the Sooner wrestling team and is a management major. This season the junior compiled a 30-5 record and qualified for the NCAA Championships for the second-consecutive season. Kjeldgaard climbed as high as fourth in the national polls and was Big 12 runner-up in his weight class. He was part of a Sooner squad that finished fourth at the NCAA Championships.
Ly, a zoology major from Stillwater, Okla., was named to the Academic All-American team for the first time after earning All-District VI honors each of the past two seasons. The senior team captain has set three career highs and has been an integral component of OU's lineup in each of his four seasons. Ly was a candidate for the Nissen-Emery Award, presented annually to the nation's top men's senior collegiate gymnast, helped lead OU to a fourth-place NCAA finish after being ranked as high as second nationally. He was also awarded OU's Athletic Council's Service Award at the Second Annual Max Weitzenhoffer Scholar Athlete Breakfast this morning.
