NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma baseball team defeated 10th-ranked Houston, 5-2, Tuesday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park for its sixth win in a row. The victory was the second win of the season for the Sooners (24-14) against the Cougars (24-12). OU second baseman Zach Lekse also extended a streak of his own to 18-straight games with a hit as part of a 1-for-3 performance, including a run scored and an RBI. Rocky Cherry (5-4) picked up the win for the team in relief, while Jeff Bajenaru registered his 10th save of the season.
Entering the bottom of the seventh inning tied at two, Oklahoma scored the three deciding runs on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Tommy Whiteman (1-for-3) and RBI singles by Lekse and first baseman Rick Park (1-for-4) off Houston reliever Alex Jackson (0-1). The Sooners tallied their first two runs in the fourth and fifth innings as Bajenaru (1-for-4) and Park both nailed RBI doubles. Every Sooner starter, except one, collected a base hit on the evening.
Houston first baseman J.P. Woodward (1-for-4) drove in the Cougars' first run of the game and designated hitter Shane Nance (1-for-4) hit a solo homer to account for the Cougars' final run.
OU travels to Lawrence, Kan., for a three-game series at Kansas beginning Friday at 7 p.m.
