NORMAN, Okla. - After falling to Murray State on Tuesday, the Oklahoma baseball team rebounded by defeating the Thoroughbreds, 7-1, Wednesday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park to split the two-game series. Substitute starting pitcher Jeff Wigington (2-0), who replaced original starting pitcher Rick Park before the game, threw a career-high eight innings to pick up the win for the Sooners. The junior righthander allowed only one run on six hits while setting another career high in strikeouts with six. OU improved to 13-8 overall and MSU fell to 3-14.
Shortstop Tommy Whiteman paced the Sooner offense on the afternoon by scoring two runs and going 3-for-4 at the plate. First baseman Sean Murphy collected two of his game-high three RBIs on a two-run homer in the sixth inning. The home run was Murphy's third in four games. Murphy, third baseman Jason Bartlett and centerfielder Jerome Godsey each finished the game with two hits a piece.
First baseman Andy Mazzier drove in Murray State's only run on a base hit in the third inning to score shortstop Chris Johnson. Thoroughbred starting pitcher Scott Greene (0-1) was charged with the loss after lasting only three innings and giving up three unearned runs.
The Sooners return to conference action on Friday at 6:30 p.m. against Nebraska.
