NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma has moved into second place in the latest men's gymnastics rankings. OU's NCAA average of 229.062 trails only Michigan. Michigan averages a 230.837. The No. 2 ranking is the Sooners highest regular ranking since 1991, OU's last national championship season.
OU has posted back-to-back 230-point plus performances for the first time since the 1997 season when it finished as the NCAA runner-up. This season the Sooners have set new team records on the floor exercise (39.625), pommel horse (38.975) and still rings (38.80) and tied the horizontal bar record (39.00). Individually, junior Brendan O'Neil and freshman Shannon Carrion have both surpassed the old record on the floor (9.95). Junior Gabe Hansen has tied the pommel horse record (9.85) and sophomore David Johnston tied the school best on the still rings (9.90)
"We feel we've worked very hard and earned the No. 2 ranking in the country," said Interim Head Coach Mark Williams. "I hope going into the conference and NCAA championships that we'll be able to perform to our abilities and meet the expectations of this ranking."
OU will be in action this weekend when it travels to Colorado Springs, Colo., to compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on March 17-18. Action begins at 7 p.m. both nights.
