ARLINGTON, Texas - The University of Oklahoma baseball team rebounded from a three-game skid with an 11-8 victory over the Texas-Arlington Tuesday afternoon at Allan Saxe Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Junior righthander Jeff Wigington (1-0) picked up the win for the Sooners after pitching two innings and allowing only one hit and no runs. Oklahoma improved to 7-5 on the season, while Texas-Arlington fell to 9-7.
OU fell behind by three runs before tying the game at three in the fourth inning as a base hit by third baseman Jason Bartlett and an error by UTA centerfielder Daniel Ortmeier allowed first baseman Rick Park and rightfielder Eliot Joyner to score. Bartlett eventually scored after a wild pitch advanced him to third and catcher Josh Witcher hit a sacrifice fly to bring him home.
With the score tied at six, the Sooners grabbed a commanding lead in the top of the ninth. With two out and a man on, Park homered to drive in the first two runs of the inning. Then Joyner reached on an error and was singled in by Bartlett, who eventually came around to score on a double by Witcher.
Park, Bartlett and second baseman Zach Lekse picked up three hits apiece on the afternoon, while Joyner also produced a 2-for-5 performance with a two-run home run.
The Mavericks were led offensively by designated hitter John-Paul Davis who went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and a RBI. UTA reliever Todd George (0-1) suffered his first loss of the season.
The Sooners open conference play this Friday against Kansas State at 3 p.m. L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman.
