NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma senior Byron Tucker was selected the Big 12 Conference Wrestler of the Week as announced by the league office Tuesday. The nation's top ranked wrestler at 174 pounds, Tucker is undefeated on the season at 26-0 and has won 24 of those matches by major decision or better. He is the third Sooner wrestler to win the award this season and the second in as many weeks.
Tucker has qualified for three NCAA tournaments during his OU career and was the 1997 Big 12 runner-up. He wrestled as a true freshman during the 1995-96 season, placing third at the Big Eight Tournament and being named to the Amateur Wrestling News All-Rookie second team. Tucker began the 1997-98 season in redshirt, but was forced to compete when injuries took a toll on the Sooner lineup. That same season Tucker was invited to compete in the NWCA All-Star Classic. He won the Oklahoma Open and Great Plains Open while redshirting last season. Tucker earned his 100th career victory on Feb. 13 at home against Oklahoma State and currently has 101 career wins.
"Byron Tucker is a stud," said Head Coach Jack Spates. "He is in the midst of the most dominating season I have ever witnessed. I'm extremely happy for him and very proud."
"It's an honor," said Tucker. "Hopefully I can continue to compete at my best."
Byron Tucker and the rest of the Oklahoma seniors will compete in their final home dual this Thursday against Michigan State. Action begins at 6 p.m. at the OU Field House.
