Sooners Outlast Bearkats, 9-8, at Houston Tournament

Houston, Texas - The University of Oklahoma's baseball team (4-2) pounded out 13 hits, including two home runs, to defeat Sam Houston State (1-7), 9-8, Friday afternoon in Game One of the Houston Tournament in Houston, Texas. OU's Austin Mix (2-0) picked up the win after pitching four innings of relief, while Jeff Bajenaru closed out Sam Houston State in the ninth to earn his first save of the year.

Oklahoma started the scoring in the third inning when shortstop Tommy Whiteman collected a RBI single, driving in third baseman Jason Bartlett to put OU on top 1-0. After the Bearkats grabbed the lead with four runs in the fourth, the Sooners pulled within a run by answering with two runs in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Sean Murphy and a run-scoring double by rightfielder Jeff Bajenaru.

OU then exploded with five runs in the sixth on a two-run home run by catcher Eliot Joyner and a three-run shot by designated hitter Rick Park and added a final run in the seventh inning. Despite surrendering solo home runs to Sam Houston State to lead off the sixth and seventh innings, Mix and Bajenaru combined to hold the Bearkats scoreless over the final two innings to secure the win.

Eight of the nine batters in the Sooner lineup tallied hits, led by Joyner and Bajenaru's 2-for-4 performances. For the Bearkats, designated hitter John Warmke went 4-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored. Reliever Cory Walters (0-1) suffered the loss for Sam Houston State after pitching an inning and giving up the decisive six runs.

Oklahoma will face 10th ranked Houston in the second game of the tournament on Saturday at 4 p.m.
