NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma rallied to score two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the comeback fell short as Oklahoma City upset Oklahoma in baseball, 5-3, Saturday at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman. The Stars (1-0) dominated the game as their offense tagged Sooner pitching for five runs, while starting pitcher Chris Schroder (1-0) silenced the OU bats through 6.1 innings of work allowing only six hits, one run and striking out five. Oklahoma's record drops to 3-1 overall on the season.
The Sooners opened up the scoring in the third inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Catcher Eliot Joyner led off the inning with a double and scored when third baseman Jason Bartlett drove him in with another double.
OU went scoreless until the bottom of the ninth when trailing 5-1, shortstop Tommy Whiteman led off with his first home run of the year to cut OCU's lead to three. Rightfielder Sean Murphy followed with a double and scored on a single by Joyner. However, OCU relief pitcher Doug Riddle picked up the save by picking off Joyner at first and forcing centerfielder Jerome Godsey to fly out to left and Bartlett to ground out to the shortstop to end the game.
Oklahoma starting pitcher Jeff Bajenaru suffered the loss (0-1) after pitching six innings and surrendering three runs on eight hits to the Stars. Bartlett, Joyner and Whiteman each picked up two hits a piece to provide the offense on the afternoon for OU.
OCU capitalized on getting their leadoff hitter on base five times as the Stars scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, while tallying two in the seventh. Oklahoma City scattered 12 hits throughout their lineup as only two starters failed to collect a hit. Pacing the Stars offensively was designated hitter Kris Yeaman who went 2-for-4 at the plate with one run scored and a RBI.
The two teams will square off again tomorrow, Feb. 13, at 1 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman.
