Ranked 20th in the AP poll and 16th in the ESPN/USA Today version, Oklahoma improved to 6-1 on the season with its 100-72 win over North Texas tonight.
The Sooners used a 21-0 run from 12:43 to 8:11 of the first half to break a 10-10 tie and help OU to a 59-32 halftime lead.
Junior forward Aaron McGhee's 28 points (on 13-for-16 shooting) broke a three-game streak in which he failed to score in double figures. Included in McGhee's 13 baskets were a pair of three-pointers on two attempts. He is now 5-for-7 from three-point range this year. McGhee also nabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Newcomer Ronnie Griffin made his first start of the year and saw his most significant minutes. In his fourth game of the season, the junior forward totaled 10 points, seven rebounds and two steals in 18 minutes. He had played a total of 20 minutes prior to this evening.
Junior post Jozsef Szendrei made his OU debut tonight and finished with six points and five rebounds in 12 minutes. Szendrei, a junior college transfer who hails from Budapest, Hungary, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee last summer and has been rehabilitating since. He scored his first points with a basket at the 14:05 mark of the second half. All three of his field goals came after he grabbed offensive rebounds.
Junior guard Michael Cano made his 23rd career appearance tonight, but it was the first time he saw action in the first half of a game. He entered the contest with less than a minute to play in the first half.
Richard Ainooson saw his first action of the season and nailed a three-point basket in the closing minute to get OU to the 100-point mark.
Oklahoma forced the Mean Green into 25 turnovers tonight while committing 12 itself.
