The University of Oklahoma men's basketball team began its 2000-01 season with an 82-77 victory over the California Southwest All-Stars tonight at Lloyd Noble Center. The Sooners, ranked 21st in the first edition of the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll released earlier this week, ran their exhibition winning streak to 26 games and handed the All-Stars their first loss in four preseason contests.

Senior guard Kelley Newton came off the bench and led the Sooners with 22 points thanks to a trio of three-pointers and a 7-for-7 performance from the free throw line. The All-Stars' Kris Johnson paced his squad with 19 points. The former UCLA standout had averaged 30.3 points in the All-Stars' first three games.

Junior college transfer Daryan Selvy recorded a double-double in his first action as a Sooner by scoring 14 points and grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds. Aaron McGhee, another junior college product playing his first game at OU, scored the Sooners' first 10 points of the game, six on a pair of three-pointers. The forward finished with 13 points and eight boards.

Sophomore point guard Hollis Price added 11 points for Oklahoma and handed out a game-high five assists.

"The things that I've learned from these kind of exhibition game over the years is you take it, digest it and you just move on," said OU Head Coach Kelvin Sampson. "There are two positives that you can take from this game. Number one is that we won, and that shouldn't be underestimated. Number two, we got a lot of our new guys some experience."

The Sooners, historically a solid free throw shooting team under Sampson, struggled a bit tonight by shooting .639 from the line tonight (23-for-36). OU owned the advantage on the glass, 44-30, and grabbed 24 offensive rebounds.

The All-Stars, who shot .604 from the field compared to OU's .385, dropped to 3-1 on their exhibition tour. The team beat Arizona State, Utah and Northern Arizona the past three nights.

OU plays its second and final exhibition game Saturday, Nov. 11, against Global Sports. The Sooners open their regular season Friday, Nov. 17, against Alcorn State in the Sooner Invitational at Lloyd Noble Center.
