OU Wrestlers Win Oklahoma Gold Classic

BROCKPORT, N.Y. - The University of Oklahoma wrestling team claimed the team championship in its first competition of the season, the Oklahoma Gold Classic, in Brockport, N.Y. The Sooners accumulated 161.5 team points to out-distance runner-up Edinboro (133.0) and third-place Bloomsburg (125.5). OU also crowned five individual champions, including the tournament's most outstanding wrestler, 141-pound Michael Lightner.

Oklahoma claimed the top two spots at 125 pounds where Bo Maynes defeated teammate Matt Ridings, 10-7, in the championship match. Sooners Witt Durden (133 pounds), Lightner, Jared Frayer (149 pounds) and Robbie Waller (165 pounds) also claimed individual titles. Lightner won two matches by technical fall and one by fall as Frayer pinned two opponents en route to their titles.

In addition to Ridings, two other Sooners finished second in their weight class. Michael Barger finished second at 174 pounds, falling to NCAA runner-up Josh Koscheck, 9-2, while Heavyweight Leonce Crump pinned two opponents before falling to Josh Pearse in the championship match. Two Sooners, Josh Lambrecht (third) and Jeff Henning (sixth) placed at 184 pounds. Waymon May and David Stitt placed fourth and fifth, respectively, at 197 pounds.

"It was a very instructive engagement," said OU Head Coach Jack Spates. "I can't say that I was ecstatic. It was good to dominate a tournament with Edinboro, who is nationally ranked, and other tough teams but we must become more aggressive. Individually, there were some bright spots. Bo Maynes, Matt Ridings, Witt Durden, Michael Lightner, Jared Frayer and Robbie Waller wrestled well. Michael Barger and Leonce Crump showed some bright spots. We must wrestler with more abandon and confront our weaknesses. We need to step it up a notch from here.

Sooner wrestlers will return to the mat on Sunday, Nov. 19, when they travel to Columbia, Mo., to compete in the Missouri Open.
