Wrestling Takes Two At Lone Star Duals

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - The fifth-ranked University of Oklahoma wrestling team, without the service of three starters, defeated Northern Illinois, 34-12, and Brown, 37-9, but fell to top-ranked Iowa, 21-12, at the third annual Lone Star Duals in Grand Prairie, Texas. The two wins and loss moved OUs record to 8-1-1.
In its first dual, OU defeated Northern Illinois in seven of 10 matches in a 34-12 victory. The Sooners collected a season high four pins in the win. Witt Durden (133), Jared Frayer (149), David Kjeldgaard (157) and Orville Palmer (197) all won via fall. Bo Maynes (125), Byron Tucker (174) and Tommy Grossman (184) also collected Sooner victories.
The Sooners won eight of 10 matches from Brown, including the first five, to cruise to a 37-9 victory. Maynes, Durden and Frayer pinned their opponents. Michael Lightner, Kjeldgaard, Michael Barger and Palmer all won by major decision.
Iowa jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead and held off a Sooner rally to defeat OU, 21-12. Frayer and Palmer upset Iowas Mike Zadick, 11-4, and Lee Weber, 7-5, respectively. Kjeldgaard defeated Matt Anderson, 2-0, wrestling up a weight class at 165 pounds. Tucker defeated Scott Kauffman, 13-6.
The Sooners will be back on the mat this Saturday, Jan. 15, when they host Arizona. Action will take place at the OU Field House beginning at 7 p.m.
