OU Wrestlers Down North Carolina State

NORMAN, Okla. - Despite wrestling without the service of two undefeated starters, the University of Oklahoma wrestling team defeated North Carolina State, 36-3, Monday at the OU Field House. Nine Sooner grapplers claimed victories, including a David Kjeldgaard fall and technical falls by Michael Lightner and Byron Tucker.

The match began at 141 pounds when Lightner defeated Oraefo Brown, 21-5 (6:29). Jared Frayer (149) followed with a 2-0 decision over Tommy Davis and Kjeldgaard (157) pinned Steve Wiggins in :59. N.C. State's only victory of the dual came at 165 pounds where Scott Garren defeated James O'Leary, who was wrestling in place of starter Robbie Waller, 8-3.

OU followed with victories in the last six bouts. Tucker defeated Kevin Boross by technical fall, 16-0 (6:39), at 174 pounds and Tommy Grossman decisioned Zach Breitenbach, 8-2. Orville Palmer downed Jason Gore by major decision, 15-6, in the 197-pound match. Heavyweight Brent Boeshans shutout Mike Mordarski, 2-0. Matt Ridings used a 1:56 riding time advantage to defeat George Cintron, 7-6, at 125 pounds and 133-pounder Witt Durden, seeing his first action since Nov. 30, won by major decision, 16-5, over Lee Carroll.

Oklahoma will be back in action this Saturday, when they compete in the Lone Star Duals in Grand Prairie, Texas. OU will face Northern Illinois, Brown and top-ranked Iowa. Duals begin at 10:30 a.m. and will be held in Warrior Coliseum.
