OU Wrestlers Upset Iowa State

NORMAN, Okla. - The fifth-ranked University of Oklahoma wrestling team upset the second-ranked Iowa State Cyclones, 18-17, in front of 833 fans at the OU Field House tonight. The Sooners and Cyclones split the 10 matches but the Sooners earned bonus points at 174 and 125 pounds to capture the victory. The win moved OU to 13-3-1 on the season. Iowa State fell to 16-2.

OU jumped to an early 6-0 lead with a Jared Frayer 10-4 win over Billy Maldonado and a David Kjeldgaard 10-5 decision against Cole Sanderson at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively. Iowa State's top-ranked Joe Heskett defeated Dustin Walker by major decision, 16-4, at 165 pounds to bring the score to 6-4. OU's Byron Tucker, ranked No. 1 at 174 pounds, responded with a technical fall victory over Perry Parks, 20-5 (6:23) to push the Sooner lead to 11-4.

Iowa State won the dual's next three matches to take their first lead, 14-11. Top-ranked Cael Sanderson defeated Tommy Grossman, 20-4, but failed to collect any near fall points and settled for a major decision at 184 pounds. Zach Thompson recorded a takedown with 13 seconds remaining in sudden victory overtime to defeat Orville Palmer, 3-1, at 197, and heavyweight Mark Knauer earned a takedown with seven seconds remaining for a 3-1 upset over OU's Brent Boeshans. At 125 pounds, Quantres Bates defeated Matt Azevedo by major decision, 15-5, to put OU back ahead, 15-14. Iowa State reclaimed the lead in the 133-pound bout when Cody Sanderson decisioned Witt Durden, 10-4. OU's Michael Lightner secured the victory for the Sooners in the dual's final match by defeating ISU's Sonny Marchette, 3-0.

Oklahoma will be back on the mat this Friday, Feb. 4, when it travels to Lincoln, Neb., to battle the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Action will begin at 7 p.m.
