No. 5 Oklahoma Hosts No. 2 Iowa State In A Battle Of Wrestling Powerhouses

The Sooners
OU enters this weekend's action sporting a 12-3-1 record. So far this season, 14 Sooner grapplers have won at least 10 matches and four have 20 or more wins. Nine OU wrestlers are ranked in the top 10 by Amateur Wrestling News or InterMat, including seven ranked in the top 10, including top-ranked 174 pounder Byron Tucker. OU is outscoring its opponents by an average of 29.6 to 9.8 this season. Oklahoma posted back-to-back 40-plus point duals for the first time since the 1985 season when they defeated Fresno State, 42-4, and Cal Poly, 42-3. In its 16 duals this season, OU has won nine of the 10 matches five times. Last weekend, the Sooners finished fourth at the Cliff/Keen NWCA National Duals.

Iowa State
The second-ranked Iowa State Cyclones bring a 15-1 record into Saturday night's contest. Last weekend at the Cliff Keen/NWCA National/Duals, Iowa State defeated OU, 18-15. Nine Cyclones are ranked by Amateur Wrestling News or InterMat, including two top-ranked wrestlers, Joe Heskett (165) and Cael Sanderson (184), and two more ranked second nationally, Cody Sanderson (133) and Trent Hynek (Hwt.). In last week's dual, OU and Iowa State split matches with Quantres Bates (125), Michael Lightner (141), David Kjeldgaard (157), Byron Tucker (174) and Brent Boeshans (Hwt.) claiming victories for the Sooners.

Last Time Out
The fifth-ranked University of Oklahoma wrestling team finished fourth at the Cliff Keen/NWCA National Duals. The Sooners defeated No. 17 Arizona State, 38-4, and seventh-ranked Nebraska, 23-16, before falling to second-ranked Iowa State, 18-15, in the semifinals. OU rebounded by defeating Arizona State for the second time in two days, 26-9, before falling to Oklahoma State, 19-13, in the third-place match.

Lightner, Spates Named to NWCA All-Star Classic
Michael Lightner, the nation's fourth-ranked 141 pounder and Sooner Head Coach Jack Spates have been named to the 2000 NWCA All-Star Classic to be held on Feb. 7. This will be Lightner's second time to compete in the classic. He dropped a 6-4 sudden victory decision to Clarion's Mark Angle last season. Lightner and the second-ranked Angle will compete against each other once again this season. Iowa's Doug Schwab was originally scheduled to face Lightner. Spates competed in the All-Star Classic twice as a wrestler, winning both matches.
