Wrestlers Finish Fourth At National Duals

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The fifth-ranked University of Oklahoma wrestling team defeated Arizona State, 26-9, but fell to third-seeded Oklahoma State, 19-13, to finish fourth at the Cliff Keen/NWCA National Duals. The one win and one loss move the Sooners record to 12-3-1.

In the consolation semifinals, OU defeated Arizona State for the second time in as many days, downing the Sun Devils, 26-9. Arizona State won the duals first match, a Mike Kawamura 8-6 victory over Bo Maynes at 125 pounds. OU responded by winning the next four bouts. Witt Durden decisioned Daniel Hyman, 4-3 at 133 and Michael Lightner defeated David Douglas, 8-5 at 141. Jared Frayer, OU's 149 pounder, snapped a two-match losing streak, pinning Quinn Foster in 6:08, and David Kjeldgaard won by major decision, 14-6, over ASU's Nick Frost. Arizona State picked up its second victory at 165 pound when Steve Blackford defeated Robbie Waller, 4-0. The Sooners put the dual away by winning the next three matches. Michael Barger downed Curtis Owens, 6-2, at 174, Nick Curcio won by major decision, 15-5, over Will McCleve at 184 and 197-pound Orville Palmer decisioned Erik Gladish, 11-4. ASU's Randy Leydecker defeated OU's Gary Barber, 8-1, in the heavyweight match.

In the third-place match, Oklahoma State jumped out to an early 6-0 and won two of the final three matches to defeat the Sooners, 19-13. Quantres Bates dropped his first decision of the season when he was upset by OSU's Jeff Ragan, 12-10, in the 125-pound match. Charles Walker followed with a 9-4 win over Durden at 133. Fourth-ranked Lightner upset third-ranked Jamill Kelly, 5-1, at 141 pounds for the Sooners first victory. OSU's Reggie Wright responded with a 4-1 win over Frayer at 149. The two teams split the next two matches. OU's Kjeldgaard beat Brian Burrows, 9-3, and OSU's Ty Wilcox downed Waller, 4-2. A Tucker 17-7 major decision over Billy Gabel at 174 pounds cut the Cowboys lead to 12-10, but OSU won the next two matches to put the dual away. Daniel Cormier won by major decision over Tommy Grossman, 11-3, at 184 and in the 197-pound match, Mark Muoz decisioned Palmer, 8-4. Heavyweight Boeshans upset OSU's Dave Anderton, 3-1, in the dual's final match.

The Sooners will be back in action Saturday, Jan. 19, against Iowa State at the OU Field House. Action begins at 7 p.m.
