Oklahoma Wrestlers Finish 2-1 At National Duals

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The fifth-ranked University of Oklahoma wrestling team defeated Arizona State, 38-4, and Nebraska, 23-16 before falling to top-seeded Iowa State, 18-5, on the opening day of the Cliff Keen/NWCA National Duals in University Park, Pa. The two wins and one loss place OU in the consolation semifinals where it will face Arizona State for the third time in the past eight days. The Sooners record moves to 11-2-1 on the season.

OU opened the tournament by defeating Arizona State for the second time in a week, 38-4. The Sooners picked up victories in nine of 10 weight classes, including a Byron Tucker pin at 174 pounds. Quantres Bates (125), Witt Durden (133), Michael Lightner (141), Jared Frayer (149), David Kjeldgaard (157), Tommy Grossman (184), Orville Palmer (197) and Gary Barber (Hwt.) also picked up wins for the Sooners. For Bates, it was his first action since Dec. 11.

The Sooners split the 10 matches with Nebraska in their 23-16 win, but earned bonus points in four of their five wins. In his first action since Dec. 11, Robbie Waller pinned Tony Denke (2:46) in the 165 pound match. Lightner and Tucker both won their matches by major decision and heavyweight Brent Boeshans won by injury default.

OU also split its matches in its 18-15 loss to Iowa State, but the Cyclones' Cael Sanderson pinned Grossman at 184 pounds and the Sooners were penalized one team point. Tucker won by major decision, 14-2, over Perry Parks, in the duals only other bonus point match. Bates, Lightner, Kjeldgaard and Boeshans also picked up victories for the Sooners.

The Sooners will be back on the mat tommorow, at 11 a.m. when they face Arizona State. OU's second match will begin at 2 p.m.
