The Sooners
OU enters this weekend's action sporting a 9-1-1 record. So far this season, 14 Sooner grapplers have won at least 10 matches and nine are ranked in the top 20 by Amateur Wrestling News and Intermat. Eight Sooner Wrestlers are ranked in the top 10, including top-ranked 174 pounder Byron Tucker. OU is outscoring its opponents by an average of 32.6 to 8.3 this season. Oklahoma posted back-to-back 40-plus point duals for the first time since the 1985 season when they defeated Fresno State, 42-4, and Cal Poly, 42-3. In its 11 duals this season, OU has won nine of the 10 matches five times. Last Saturday, OU defeated Arizona State, 34-10.

National Duals
The 2000 Cliff Keen/NWCA National Wrestling Duals will comprised of a field consisting of 16 teams, No. 17 Arizona State, No. 15 Cal. State Bakersfield, No. 18 Central Michigan, No. 14 Cornell, No. 2 Iowa State, No. 3 Minnesota, Montana State Northern, #7 Nebraska, #5 Oklahoma, #4 Oklahoma State, #12 Pennsylvania, # 25 Penn State, Pittsburgh-Johnstown, Rider, Wartburg College and #16 West Virginia. On Friday, at 1 p.m., a press conference involving the coaches of the top-three ranked teams in the National Duals and drawing of the bracket will take place. The top eight seeds will be determined by the top eight teams in the last NWCA Coaches Poll released prior to the competition. The seeded teams will draw from the remaining eight teams to determine their first round opponents. Brackets will be posted and faxed to sports information outlets and then be sent to local media. Wrestling begins at 9 a.m. On Saturday with the semifinals at 8 p.m. Consolation matches begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday with the championship match starting at 2 p.m. Oklahoma finished fifth at last year's National Dual's. Of the 16 teams in this year's field, OU has only competed against Oklahoma State (T, 16-16), Arizona State (W, 34-10) and Pitt-Johnstown at the Oklahoma Gold Classic. Oklahoma State (5-1999, 1997, 1994, 1990, 1989), Minnesota (1998) and Penn State (2-1993, 1991) are the only returning champions in the field.

Last Time Out
The fifth-ranked University of Oklahoma wrestling team defeated Arizona State, 34-10, Saturday. The Sooners claimed victories in eight of the ten weight classes, including a Byron Tucker pin at 174 pounds, despite wrestling without injured starters Quantres Bates (125), Robbie Waller (165) and Orville Palmer (197). The win moved OU to 9-1-1 on the season.

Lightner, Spates Named to NWCA All-Star Classic
Michael Lightner, the nation's fourth-ranked 141 pounder and Sooner Head Coach Jack Spates have been named to the 2000 NWCA All-Star Classic to be held on Feb. 7. This will be Lightner's second time to compete in the classic. He dropped a 6-4 sudden victory decision to Clarion's Mark Angle last season. Lightner and the second-ranked Angle will compete against each other once again this season. Iowa's Doug Schwab was originally scheduled to face Lightner. Spates competed in the All-Star Classic twice as a wrestler, winning both matches.

Head Coach Jack Spates
Entering his seventh season at the helm of the OU wrestling program, Jack Spates' Sooners are once again among the top teams in the nation. This former college national champion and NCAA runner-up is nationally known for taking wrestlers and programs who have experienced minimal success and turning them into champions. Coming to a program with the tradition that the University of Oklahoma has was the kind of challenge Spates had looked for in his career.

In the three years prior to Spates arrival at OU, the Sooners' average finish at the NCAA Championships was 23rd. In his first six years, he has guided his squads to four top-10 finishes, including a sixth-place finish at last season's NCAA Championships.

Spates has developed 18 All-Americans while at OU, including four-time All-American and NCAA Champion John Kading at 190 pounds.

Last season, Spates led OU to an 18-5-1 record, one win shy of the school record set in 1974, the year the Sooners last won a national championship. He also led Oklahoma to its first conference championship since 1986 and the squad earned three individual conference titles for the first time since 1990.

The Rankings
