NORMAN, Okla. - The fifth-ranked University of Oklahoma wrestling team defeated Arizona State, 34-10, Saturday in front of 465 fans at the OU Field House. The Sooners claimed victories in eight of the ten weight classes, including a Byron Tucker pin at 174 pounds, despite wrestling without injured starters Quantres Bates (125), Robbie Waller (165) and Orville Palmer (197). The win moved OU to 9-1-1 on the season. The Sun Devils fell to 3-4.
OU claimed victories in the dual's first four matches. Witt Durden defeated Daniel Hyman, 7-4, at 133 pounds in the opening match and Michael Lightner followed with a 13-5 major decision over David Douglas in the 141-pound bout. Jared Frayer won by forfeit at 149 pounds and David Kjeldgaard picked up the second of four OU major decisions, 15-5, over Nick Frost at 157. Arizona State's first victory came at 165 pounds where Steve Blackford pinned Dustin Walker in 1:18.
The Sooners won the next two matches, Tucker's pin of Curtis Owen in 2:30 and a Tommy Grossman's 13-5 major decision of Will McCleve at 184 pounds. The Sun Devils picked up their second win at 197, Erik Gladish's 8-0 major decision over Nick Curcio, who was wrestling up a weight class. OU won the final two matches. Brent Boeshans decisioned Randy Leydecker, 5-2, at heavyweight and 125 pound Bo Maynes downed Adam Chavira by major decision, 11-0.
Oklahoma will be back in action this Friday and Saturday, Jan. 22-23, when it competes in the 2000 Cliff Keen/NWCA National Wrestling Duals in University Park, Pa.
