Jared Frayer Named Big 12 Wrestler Of The Week

NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma sophomore Jared Frayer was selected the Big 12 Conference Wrestler of the Week as announced by the league office Tuesday. The 149 pounder went 4-0 last week, pinning two opponents and upseting Iowa's fifth-ranked Mike Zadick. Frayer is now 15-3 on the season and is currently ranked fifth in the nation by Amateur Wrestling News and sixth by Intermat. He is also tied for the team lead in pins with six. Frayer is the first Sooner wrestler to win the award this season. Frayer was also honored as the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week once last season.

Last season, as a redshirt-freshman, Frayer finished second at the Big 12 Championships and earned an appearance at the NCAA Championships. He was also named to the Academic All-Big 12 second team. In 1997, Frayer won the the Junior National Wrestling Championship, in which he upset Zadick, at 132 pounds and was ranked No. 1 in the nation by Wrestler's Express.

"This is a great and well deserved honor for Jared," said Head Coach Jack Spates. "Coming off an outstanding performance against Mike Zadick from Iowa. Zadick is an outstanding wrestler and was coming off a performance in which he beat the number two ranked wrestler in the country. This was a great, great performance. We anticipate even better things to come."

"It's an honor and it's something I take pride in," said Frayer. "It's good to get awards, but it's on the road to my final goal of being an NCAA champion. If those awards come I'm proud and I hope there's more to come down the road in the future."

Frayer and the rest of the Sooners will host Arizona State Saturday, Jan. 15, in the OU Field House. Action begins at 7 p.m.
