NORMAN, Okla. - Barry Weldon, an NCAA champion and two-time All-American at Iowa State, and Rodney Jones, a three-time All-American as a Sooner, have been hired as assistant OU wrestling coaches, announced head coach Jack Spates this afternoon.
Weldon, a Madill, Okla., native, compiled a 104-37 record during his four-year career at Iowa State. He finished fifth at the NCAA Championships as a junior in 1996 and also finished as the Big Eight runner-up. As a senior in 1997, Weldon compiled a 34-3 record and won the NCAA title at 177 pounds. He served as ISU's club coach last season.
"Barry is an outstanding wrestler and coach," said Spates. "He has great technical expertise, work ethic and a positive attitude. We're thrilled to bring him home and make him part of our program."
Jones enters his first season in the coaching ranks, but is no stranger to the OU program. The Tulsa product was a three-time All-American during his stellar OU wrestling career and was a runner up at the NCAA Championships last season. Jones compiled a 97-34 record during his four-year collegiate career.
"As a former wrestler here at the University of Oklahoma, Rod knows our guys and our system. He brings a winning attitude, strong work ethic and great spirit with him," commented Spates.
