Sooners Set to Begin New Season
The University of Oklahoma men's and women's cross country teams will begin the 1999 season this Friday when they travel to Tulsa for the Hurricane Invitational. The men's 4K race is set to start at 6 p.m., while the women's 2K will begin at 6:45 p.m. at Mohawk Park.

Other top collegiate teams competing include Arkansas and Southwest Missouri State.

Top Runners Returning
This year's squads will be looking for leadership from a number of runners. The women return eight letterwinners including a strong core of upperclassman. Seniors Andrea DeLozier, Mindy Mizell, Sarah Harvey and Corrie Hussar are expected to improve this year. Junior Stephanie Webb will also contribute a great deal. The women's squad finished ninth at the Big 12 Championships last year.

"On the women's side I expect very good things this year," said new head coach Todd Maycumber. "I think we have five solid runners who have been leaders and frontrunners in the past and who have the opportunity to help us out."

The men's squad returns all nine lettermen from last year's team that finished 10th at the conference championships. Expected to lead the men's team this year are juniors Matt Roman and Sam Stalcup and sophomore Jimmy Martinez.

"We will be much improved this year on the men's side," said Maycumber. "I feel that this will be the best overall team that we've had in quite some time in terms of depth. We're extremely young, but it's a good foundation for the future."

Maycumber Takes Over
Coaching this year's team will be Todd Maycumber, who was named head coach in July following the departure of Kyle Cranford. Maycumber had served as a track and field assistant coach the past three seasons at his alma mater. A 1994 Oklahoma graduate, Maycumber was a three-year track letterwinner and earned all conference honors during his junior and senior seasons.

Before transferring to Oklahoma in 1990, he attended the University of New Mexico. There, he was named to the all-conference teams in indoor and outdoor track.
