NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione announced today that Greg Buwick has resigned his head men's gymnastics coaching position effective Aug. 31. Buwick has been at the University of Oklahoma for 21 years, including the last 16 as head coach.
"I have been blessed to have had the opportunity to lead this program," said Buwick. "I am following the advice that I have given my athletes - to follow your heart and avoid situations that put a ceiling on your ability to succeed, either financially or professionally. I take great pride in the fact that Oklahoma is recognized as a premier gymnastics program in the United States. The university and athletic department have been great to me. As a result of my experiences as an athlete, alumnus and employee, I have deep loyalty.
"Throughout the years, nothing has been more special to me than the relationships I have developed with my athletes," Buwick continued. "It has been a rewarding experience to watch them experience success as great athletes, mature into adults and move on to successful professions. They each have deep loyalty to the men's gymnastics program and the university."
During his tenure as men's head gymnastics coach at OU, he has recorded 224 wins, 87 losses and five conference team titles, and has produced 49 conference individual champions, one team NCAA runner-up finish and an NCAA team national championship. In addition, OU gymnasts have earned All-America honors 65 times under Buwick's direction and have won national championships in the floor exercise, still rings and horizontal bar. He has also coached 10 Nissen Award finalists and three Nissen Award winners, including the last two Dan Fink (1998) and Todd Bishop (1999).
Buwick had gained the reputation as one of the premier college coaches in men's gymnastics and was voted National Coach of the Year in 1991. He also earned coach-of-the-year honors from the conference four times and the Midwest Region three times.
"We want to thank Greg for his years of loyal service to the University of Oklahoma and for the tremendous success that he has brought to the men's gymnastics program," said Castiglione. "Our program is nationally recognized for its ability to produce outstanding young men who have found success in competition, as well as in the classroom. I fully understand the professional decision that he has made and join with many wishing him the best in his new endeavor."
Castiglione added that Mark Williams, who has just finished his 11th season as an assistant coach for the OU program, will be promoted to interim head coach. Williams has been involved with coaching gymnastics on the junior, national and international levels.
