Norman, Okla. - Stacey Dales, a sophomore on the University of Oklahoma women's basketball team, has been named to the Canadian national team that will compete in the Pan American Games this week.
Dales scored 16 points, had three steals and added five assists to pace the Canadian team to a 72-64 exhibition victory over Slovakia. The Canadians won both games of the two-game warm-up to the Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
Dales was one of 19 athletes invited to training camp from July 3-8 in Toronto, Ontario, and one of only 12 to make the final cut following the two exhibition games against Slovakia in Regina.
"I'm extremely honored to be selected to Canada's national team," said Dales. "This is a tremendous learning experience for me and hopefully it will assist me in becoming a better player for the University of Oklahoma."
In May the Canadian National team qualified for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney at the COPABA qualification tournament in Havana, Cuba. Dales served as an alternate on that team.
"We are extremely excited for Stacey," said OU Head Coach Sherri Coale. "This is an outstanding opportunity for her to compete at a high level of international competition and, to do so while representing her country and the University of Oklahoma, is a great accomplishment."
As a freshman last season, Dales was named to the All-Big 12 Conference honorable mention team and Academic All-Big 12 first team. She was OU's leader in assists and ranked second in rebounds and started all 29 of OU's games last year.
The basketball portion of the women's Pan Am Games are set to start July 30 with the gold medal game scheduled for August 7. The top four teams in the preliminary round will advance to the semifinals on Aug. 5-6. Canada plays its first game on Friday, July 30, at 7 p.m. (CST) in Winnipeg against the Dominican Republic.
