NORMAN, Okla. - On the heels of his second straight first-team Academic All-Big 12 Conference selection, University of Oklahoma junior first baseman Casey Bookout has been named to the GTE/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) District VI Academic All-America baseball team.

The Stroud, Okla., product and management information systems major was one of five players from Big 12-member schools named to the 12-player squad selected from Division I schools in Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas.

Bookout ranks fifth in the Big 12 in bating with a .403 average and, with 23 home runs on the season, needs one more to OUs season home run mark of 24 set by Marty Neff in 1991.

In addition to his academic honors, Bookout was one of three Sooners named to the Austin American-Statemans All-Big 12 Team. Senior right-handed pitcher Geoff Geary (11-1) and junior shortstop Derek Wathan - second in the league batting race - were also named to the team, selected by staff writer Rick Cantu after consulting with league coaches and media relations directors.

OU senior outfielder Willy Hill and senior outfielder/pitcher Brian Shackelford - the only remaining members of the Sooners 1995 NCAA College World Series team - earned honorable mentions. With a .408 batting average on the season, Hill is tied with Wathan for second among the Big 12s hitters. Shackelford will leave OU as the schools career leader in home runs, RBIs, extra-base hits and total bases.

Oklahoma (26-16, 17-11 Big 12) is ranked No. 13 in the latest Collegiate Baseball poll and is the No. 4 seed in the Big 12 Tournament. The Sooners will face third-seeded Texas Tech in the first round of the tournament Thursday at Southwestern Bell Bricktown Ballpark. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
