Jayhawks Defeat Sooners, 6-3, in Womens Tennis

NORMAN, Okla - Playing its final home meet of the season, the 56th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners fell to the No. 48 Kansas Jayhawks, 6-3, today at the Westwood Tennis Center in Norman. After losing all six singles matches, OU salvaged three points by sweeping the doubles competition. Oklahoma falls to 13-8 overall and 6-3 in the Big 12, while Kansas improves its records to 11-10 overall and 7-2 in the conference.

The match served as the final home meet for three OU seniors: Barbie Bayless, Raluca Gheorghe and Danielle Knipp. Although Bayless did not see action, Gheorghe and Knipp were victorious at the No. 1 doubles position with an 8-6 upset of the No. 41 doubles pair of Kris Sell and Cheryl Mallaiah. The Oklahoma duo has compiled a 6-3 record while playing together this season.

At the No. 2 doubles spot, the Sooners Viviana Mracnova and Kristin Guilford battled Christi Wagenaar and Julia Sidorova for an 8-6 victory. Jennie Hamilton and Angela Stroup collected their team leading eighth doubles win by defeating KUs Monica Sekulov and Lisa Mallaiah, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles.

Oklahoma and Kansas fought close singles matches. Eight of the 14 sets played were won by two games or less. Gheorghe opened her match with a 6-3 first set win before losing the final two sets to Sell, the 23rd nationally ranked player, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1 slot. No. 100 Mracnova forced a third set at No. 2 singles against Brooke Chiller, but eventually fell 7-6, 4-6, 7-6.

The Sooners return to action on Wednesday, April 21, versus in-state rival Oklahoma State at 1:30 p.m. in Stillwater.
