NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahomas LaNeishea Caufield has been named to the 1999 Womens Basketball Journal Freshman All-America team. This is Caufield's fourth honor this year. The Ada, Okla., native has also been selected to the Womens Basketball News Service Freshman All-America second team, named the 1999 Big 12 Freshman of the Year and earned All-Big 12 second team honors.
Caufield becomes the first Sooner to be named an All-America by this organization and only the second to earn All-America status as a freshman. The first was Mandy Miller. Miller was named a Fast Break Freshmen All-America in 1984.
"Im extremely honored to be considered as one of the top freshmen in the nation," commented Caufield. "This is a huge surprise, wow. Its been a great freshman year, far from what I expected."
Caufield averages 15.5 points per game, the most by a freshman and 11th best overall in the league, and is the team leader in steal with 2.6 a game. She was a four-time Big 12 Rookie of the Week selection, the only freshman to earn this award more than once this year. Caufield, a guard, scored a career-high 32 points against Missouri and dropped 20-plus points against nine teams. The Ada, Okla., native also scored in double figures in 13-of-17 Big 12 games.
"This is a tremendous individual honor for LaNeishea," said Sooner Head Coach Sherri Coale. "Its just a reflection of the way she plays, she is an extremely consistent player. This is also a nice reflection of on our team because a player doesnt garner such an honor with the help of her teammates."
The Sooners (14-13) tips off postseason action in the Womens National Invitation Tournament with a Friday night clash with Wichita State (16-10). Game time at Wichitas Levitt Arena is 7 p.m. The game can be heard live on the OU Basketball Radio Network - WWLS 640 AM.
