NORMAN, Okla. - Competing in the absence of head coach Jack Spates, the University of Oklahoma wrestling team posted its two most dominate outings of the season, scoring 40-plus points to defeat Fresno State, 42-4, and Cal Poly, 42-3. OU had not scored 40 or more points in back-to-back duals since the 1985 season when they turned the trick against Missouri (40-3) and Drake (45-2). With the win, the Sooners record improves to 5-0-1.
Against Fresno State, OU won nine matches. Its only loss was a 10-1 setback to ninth-ranked Paris Ruiz at 133 pounds where Bo Maynes was wrestling up one weight class. Three Sooners, Quantres Bates (125), Jared Frayer (149) and Robbie Waller (165) recorded pins. Eight OU wrestlers won by major decision or better.
In the Cal Poly dual, OU bookended their 39-point win with a pair of Byron Tucker (174) and Waller pins. The fall was Waller's second of the day. Once again, OU's only loss came at 133 pounds, an Alberto Garza 8-2 decision over Maynes. Two of Cal Poly's losses were by forfeit and injury default.
The Sooners will be back in action after the New Year when they host North Carolina State on Jan. 3. Action will take place at the OU Field House beginning at 7 p.m.
