OU Wrestling Holds Red/White Classic

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma wrestling team held its final ranking match, the annual Red/White Classic, Saturday night at the OU Field House. The two teams fought to a 19-19 tie.

In the 125-pound match, Quantres Bates downed Bo Maynes, 6-4. Matt Ridings stepped up a weight class to 133 pounds to wrestle in place of Witt Durden and defeated Daniel Caruthers, 3-2. Two-time All-American and Big 12 Champion Michael Lightner won by a technical fall over Zak Abbott, 19-3, at 141 pounds and Jared Frayer pinned James O'Leary in 5:56 in the 149-pound bout. David Kjeldgaard decisioned Matt Sparkman, 11-4, at 157 pounds. Robbie Waller (165 pounds) and Byron Tucker (174 pounds) won by 13-4 major decisions over Dustin Walker and Michael Barger, respectively. In the 184-pound match, Tom Grossman defeated Rowdy Lundegreen, 3-1, and Orville Palmer downed Waymon May by major decision, 12-3. Heavyweight Brent Boeshans downed Leonce Crump in the final match, 7-2.

"I'm very pleased with our performance tonight," said Head Coach Jack Spates. "It's very impressive that we did not have an injury time out the entire night. Our guys worked very hard. We're in about as good of condition as we can be at this time of the year. There were a lot of individual performances that impressed, but the outstanding wrestler of the night had to be Jared Frayer. He was phenomenal. Also, Byron Tucker and Orville Palmer were outstanding. To beat two wrestlers who were Big 12 runners up, that is outstanding wrestling."

The Sooners will be back in action on Nov. 14 when they travel to Brockport, N.Y., for the Oklahoma Gold Classic.
