NORMAN, Okla. - In their final home appearance of the 1999 season the University of Oklahoma volleyball team was defeated by 12th ranked Nebraska, 16-18, 5-15, 6-15. The loss drops OU to 8-19 on the season and 3-14 in Big 12 action, while Nebraska moves to 22-5 and a Big 12 mark of 14-3 in conference play. The win extended the Huskers win streak to seven matches, as the Sooners have dropped four straight.
Senior Melissa Christman (Kansas City, Mo.) and junior Carolyn Kittell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) led the Sooners as Christman tallied 12 kills and Kittell registered 31 assists.
"We played hard tonight, but we got into trouble passing," said head coach Miles Pabst. "If we pass to the setter we get more opportunities and we give Nebraska all they want, we might come out on top. Our effort was great and we fought hard and we had our chances, especially in the first game, they are awful strong and have a huge block, but it all gets back to passing."
A Chantae Weathers kill in game one, which featured six lead changes, opened up a 9-3 OU advantage, but it was a kill by Nebraska's Katie Jahnke that would even the score at 12 a piece. The Sooners fought to regain the lead at 16-15 when Husker Angie Oxley had an attack error. Two service aces later, Nebraska edged OU 16-18. The Sooners fell behind 0-7 in game two before an attack error by Nebraska's Nancy Meendering gave the Sooners their first point. OU would add two more before Nebraska went on a six point run to make it 4-13. Cathy Cook rounded out OU's game two scoring with a kill, before the game ended the same way the first did, with two straight NU service aces. In game three, the Sooners were on top 3-1 before the Huskers posted 12 straight giving them a 4-14 lead. Monson gave OU their fourth point with an attack error before the Sooners earned two of their own with back-to-back blocking assists by Melissa Christman and Danielle Bookout. A Nebraska block assist by Meendering and Amber Holmquist would end the game 6-15.
OU returns to action this Saturday, November 20, as they travel to Lubbock, Texas to take on Texas Tech. Earlier this season the Red Raiders defeated the Sooners 3-0.
