NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma volleyball team was defeated by Kansas, 3-15, 15-8, 15-9, 15-2, Wednesday night at the OU Field House in Norman. The Sooners, who have lost three straight matches, fell to 6-9 overall and 1-4 in the Big 12 Conference. The Jayhawks, who have now won seven of their last nine matches, improved to 12-4 and 3-2.
Oklahoma took control of the match early by dominating game one, 15-3. The Sooners registered a .577 hitting percentage compared to KUs .227. Leading OU in game one was junior Cathy Cook with a .714 hitting clip (5k-0e-7ta). The middle blocker, who leads the nation in hitting percentage (.440), added two block assists.
In game two, the two teams were tied at 8-8, but the Jayhawks reeled off four-straight points to take a 12-8 lead before the Sooners recorded a side out. After Kansas earned a side out, it scored three straight points to capture game two, 15-8.
Game three was a struggle for both teams offensively as OU posted a .054 hitting percentage, while KU finished at .212. The Sooners jumped out to a 6-4 lead, but the Jayhawks scored 10-straight points to take a 12-6 lead and control of the game.
Game four was all Kansas as it recorded a .567 hitting efficiency. The Jayhawks quickly owned a 9-1 lead before the Sooners scored their second point of the game. OU did not earn another point in the final game as KU won, 15-2, for the match victory.
Leading Kansas was senior Amanda Reves with a match-high 19 kills. She registered a .419 hitting clip and added eight digs and four blocks. Mary Beth Albrecht, a senior outside hitter, contributed 16 kills and six digs. Sara Kidd led the team with 11 digs.
OU was led by senior Melissa Christman. The outside hitter recorded team highs of 16 kills and a .591 hitting percentage. Christman, who leads the Big 12 in service aces per game (0.46) added two aces, three digs and three block assists. Cook finished with 14 kills and a .355 hitting efficiency. Junior setter Carolyn Kittell dished out 47 assists.
Oklahoma will travel to College Station, Texas, to face No. 14 Texas A&M this Saturday at 7 p.m.
