OU Heads to Arkansas For Chili Pepper Invite
The OU men's and women's cross country teams will compete in their final regular season meet this Saturday when they head to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Chili Pepper Cross Country Festival.
The men's 10K race is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. while the women's 5K race is set to begin at 10:30 a.m.
Schools scheduled to compete include Wisconsin, Central Florida, Oklahoma State, Tulsa, New Mexico State, Abilene Christian, Louisiana State, Missouri-Kansas City, Oral Roberts, SMU, South Alabama, TCU, Iowa, Wichita State, Arkansas-Little Rock and host Arkansas, currently the No. 1-ranked men's team and No. 2-ranked women's team.
"It's going to be a really competitive meet," said OU Head Coach Todd Maycumber. "Both men's and women's squads are coming together at the right time. They're running well, they're fit, and they are mentally prepared for Arkansas."
The men's team will again be without the services of junior Matt Roman who is still recovering from a nagging leg injury. On a positive note, junior Sam Stalcup will be returning after missing the OSU meet.
The women's team will be at full strength and freshman Aisha Stringer will be making her debut.
"I feel that she's at the point now where she can be competitive," said Maycumber. "She needs to get a taste of competition at this level."
OU Competes At Cowboy Jamboree
Two weeks ago the Sooners competed in the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
The women's team finished the 5K race sixth out of 16 teams with 168 points. The men's team finished the 8K race in 13th place with 312 points.
Baylor won the women's competition with 40 points while Arkansas dominated the men's meet with 27 points after claiming five of the top 10 spots.
Martinez, DeLozier: Leaders Of The Pack
For the third consecutive week, sophomore Jimmy Martinez led the men's team and topped his career-best 8K time for the Sooners.
His previous OU career best was 26:38, which he ran at the SMU Invitational. At the Cowboy Jamboree, Martinez posted a career-best 8K time of 25:51, a tremendous improvement over his performance last year at OSU when he clocked a time of 28.16 to place 90th.
Senior Andrea DeLozier continues to lead the women's team on a weekly basis. For the third straight week, DeLozier was first across the finish line for the Sooners at the Cowboy Jamboree. She finished 19th overall at OSU with a 5K time of 18:33. Also running well for the Sooners was senior Sarah Harvey who finished 30th with a time of 18:57.
